Le Gibet Difficulty

Its uneven flight, hitting and scratching against the walls, casting a growing shadow in the moonlight, creates a nightmarish scene for the observer lying in his bed. With its repeated notes and two terrifying climaxes, this is the high point in technical difficulty of all the three movements.

Technical difficulties, such as handling the texture and controlling the voicing, are often stressed in ‘Le Gibet’, in addition to the artistic imagery of the gloomy scene and the contrast from ‘Ondine’.

3/1/2006  · I believe that Le Gibet , while not so technically challenging, would be very hard to play properly. It would take a great deal of maturity. Beauty is unbearable, drives us to despair, offering us for a minute the glimpse of an eternity that we should like to stretch out over the whole of time.

Le Gibet : For me, a sight reading NIGHTMARE. There are so many accidentals, so many slurs/ties over bar lines, ridiculously huge chords. One section ‘sounds’ like A major, but the piece is in Bb minor – he doesn’t change the key signature. Double flats, more flats, sharps. Compound chords throughout.

(List is not ranked so don’t judge me on this!) Balakirev’s Islamey Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit (Ondine) Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit ( Le Gibet ), It’s fearsomely difficult. Henle lists it as a 9 on their 1–9 difficulty scale for a reason. Even the first couple measures are a challenge. Its difficulty is perhaps underrated because it’s in the same suite as “Scarbo”, which is even harder.
